Fasting during the holy month of Ramadan means different things to different people. To some, it’s a way to get closer to God; for others, a time to let go of their attachments to the material world. For many, it’s a season of gratitude for the blessings showered upon them.
But for the children in the slums across India, R@m@dan is a time of desperate hope – a hope thatne day, their lives will be easier and that they, too, will be able to eat whenever they feel hungry. And so, they fast, despite knowing there will be no food to break their fast with.
Dev and Chandni are working to rewrite the story of these kids. Through their organization, Voice of Slum, they have taken it upon themselves to ensure that this year, thousands of children receive nutritious food to break their fast with, every evening throughout the h0ly month.
Having grown up in the slums, Dev and Chandni know what it means to be hungry
“Most children have no parents and are left to fend for themselves and pick up odd jobs. I was a ragpicker when I was barely 7. The pain of an empty stomach was the most unbearable. Years after leaving our slum lives behind us, one day, Dev and I saw something heartbreaking - a group of kids at the railway station were digging through a garbage bin and eating whatever they found! At that moment we decided to dedicate our lives to giving these kids a chance at a better life.” – Chandni, co-founder, Voice of Slum.
Since founding Voice of Slum in 2016, Dev and Chandni have helped over 1,500 kids leave the slums and become part of mainstream society. Today, they lead lives that once seemed impossible. Sabina, who was selling flowers for a living in the slums, is now the class monitor of grade 5 in an English Medium school. Ayush, who once struggled for a meal, is now an OTT star. It’s for these miracles that Dev and Chandni live.
During R@m@dan, salt is the only ‘food’ they have, to break their fast with
“Children in the slums across India are already weak and malnourished. But during this period, despite their suffering, they wish to fast. They pin all their hopes on God and pray for a miracle. And when it’s time to break their fast, some are forced to do it with just salt. Others who are lucky, get a serving of thin, watery, rice gruel. Their health suffers…and their hope is crushed…” – Dev, co-founder, Voice of Slum
Dev and Chandni need your help to deliver nutritious food to them during this special time
To ensure they don’t put their health at risk during the month of R@m@dan, Dev and Chandni are putting together thousands of grocery kits for slum-dwelling children across India. They aim to deliver 1 lakh kits containing essential groceries and nutrition that will enable 3,000+ children to break their fast with dignity every day, for 30 days. But they can’t do this alone.
